Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein in a vibrant production of  Follies. Elaine Paige gave a terrific performance.

Amazing Hugh Jackman proves again that he can do anything! A terrific showcase of his incredible talent.

Anything Goes

8 December 2011

Kristen Beth Williams ably performed the role of Reno Sweeney, usually played by Tony nominee Sutton Foster.

Bonnie & Clyde
Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre
28 November 2011

This show didn't get good reviews from the critics but the four leads performed well in a good enough production.

Wild Animals You Should Know
Lucille Lortel

This play is about two Boy Scouts, one nerdy gay and the other very handsome and a jock, and their scoutmaster who happens to be gay also.

An Evening with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin

23 November 2011

A thoroughly enjoyable evening with two Broadway veterans. They sang wonderfully familiar tunes from South Pacific, Merrily We Roll Along, Follies, Company, Evita and Carousel.

Sister Act
The Broadway Theatre
9 November 2011

The singing nuns were jubilant, hilarious and entertaining when they were singing. Patina Miller recreates her West End role with strong voice and radiant performance as Deloris van Cartier, a 1970s wannabe disco diva in Philadelphia.

Don Giovanni
Metropolitan Opera
7 November 2011

Mariusz Kwiecien sang strongly and appeared as if he did not have an accident while rehearsing which landed him in an operating room for surgery on his herniated disc.

Godspell
Circle in the Square
6 November 2011

Hunter Parrish has a fine voice in this revival of parables from the Gospels. It is virtually a non-stop jumping and gamboling on the stage and the aisles by the young cast members. Anna Maria Perez de Tagle who is of Filipino descent gave a nice rendition of "Day by Day".

Siegfried
Metropolitan Opera
1 November 2011

Jay Hunter Morris sang heroically the demigod title role. Bryn Terfel (The Wanderer/Wotan) sang his role powerfully and intensely.

A Tribute to Judy Garland
Town Hall
28 October 2011

Lorna Luft talked about her late mother with Susan Stroman. Judy's famous songs from her movies were ably sung by several performers. There was also a discussion of great American movie dancing.

Barber of Seville
Metropolitan Opera
19 October 2011

Rodion Pogossov who is scheduled to sing Figaro in later performances sang tonight because Peter Mattei was pulled to sing Don Giovanni because of Mariusz Kweicien's rehearsal accident. Pogossov sang with confidence and energy.

Jon and Juan's Wedding
Broward Center
16 October 2011

A Jewish-Cuban gay wedding in Southern Florida. The audience is actually the guests at the wedding, complete with wedding cake, champagne and food. Even danced with the cast members.

Lend Me a Tenor
Stage Door Theatre
15 October 2011

I'm glad I saw this show in Florida because I missed it while it was on Broadway. It was fun to see the chaotic, lightning-paced performance.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Palace Theatre
7 October 2011

Fun to watch, stunning costumes, great nostalgic music.

Kithless in Paradise
Lion Theatre at Theatre Row
1 October 2011

Nothing remarkable about this play about friends who drink a lot.

Play It Cool
Acorn Theatre
28 August 2011

This is a play about a gay jazz club in 1950s Hollywood. Sally Mayes stands out as the openly gay underground club owner.

Spiderman
Foxwoods Theater
14 September 2011

Very entertaining piece of theater. Glad they have fixed all the kinks that plagued the show.

Mamma Mia
Winter Garden Theatre
19 August 2011

Finally got to see this long-running show. Wanted to see Patrick Boll who I've met in one of his off-off-Broadway shows but unfortunately he was off the night I went. Enjoyed the all-to-familiar ABBA songs.

Death Takes a Holiday
Roundabout at the Laura Pels Theatre
6 August 2011

Good singing and acting. Especially liked Matt Cavenaugh and Jill Paice.

Million Dollar Quartet
Nederlander Theatre
28 July 2011

A great jam session happened almost by chance at Sun Records one afternoon in 1954 with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Very pleasurable time listening to the great rock 'n' roll tunes. The actors playing the roles were very good singers too.

Territories
Atlantic Stage 2
24 July 2011

Territories by Steven Dykes consists of two short plays: The Spoils and a light gathering of dust, two tales of betrayal and voyeurism.

Spatter Pattern
Atlantic Stage 2
23 July 2011

This play is a collection of scenes played by four actors (2 of them play several roles each). It's dark and fil-noirish and tells about a professor who allegedly murdered a college student.

Catch Me If You Can
Neil Simon Theatre
15 July 2011

Norman Leo Butz won the Tony award for his role and deservedly so. Aaron Tveit played the teenage conman Frank Abagnale, Jr.

Hair
St James Theatre
11 July 2011

Just had to see this revival because I saw the original Broadway production in 1968 and I remember I really enjoyed it then. Of course it was one of the first Broadway shows I've seen, if not the very first.

Baby It's You
Broadhurst Theatre
8 Jukly 2011

This is a musical about The Shirelles and Scepter Records founder Florence Greenberg. "Mama Said," "Yakety-Yak," "He's So Fine" are among the familiar songs.

Addams Family
Lunt-Fontanne Theatre
28 June 2011

It was Brooke Shields' opening night as a replacement in the role of Morticia and she did rather well. Always liked the TV show and fully enjoyed this musical version.

Qi Shu Fang
Skirball Center
25 June 2011

This is probably the third time I've seen this group and I love their costumes and acrobatics but the accompanying music is too loud and grating to my ears.

Master Class
MTC at The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre
22 June 2011

Tyne Daly was just marvelous as Maria Callas in this revival of Master Class. Saw it with Zoe Caldwell and Audra McDonald in the 1996 Broadway production.

Arcadia
Ethel Barrymore Theatre
19 June 2011

Tom Stoppard's play is terrific and the marvelous cast (Billy Crudup, Margaret Colin, Raul Esparza, Lia Williams, Tom Riley, Bel Powley) shared the stage in a story that's set in 1809 and late 20th century.

Jerusalem
The Music Box Theatre
17 June 2011

I was not surprised to see Mark Rylance do a terrific job as Johnny Byron, for which he won a Tony award and an Olivier award in London, after seeing his performance in La Bete in 2010.

The People in the Picture
Roundabout Theatre at Studio 54
12 May 2011

Donna Murphy transforms back and forth between the young woman Raisel and her old self Bubie. This musical takes us to the time of the Holocaust and the present.

Die Walküre
Metropolitan Opera
5 May 2011

Jonas Kaufman was in marvelous voice as Siegmund and so was Stephanie Blythe as Fricka. The rest of the cast (Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde, Bryn Terfel as Wotan, Eva-Maria Westbroek as Sieglinde) were vocally secure. Robert Lepage's "machine" went without any problems.

La Traviata
Metropolitan Opera
12 January 2011

The new La Traviata at the Met is a bold, minimalist production by Willy Decker, from the 2005 Salzburg Festival. Marina Poplavskaya sang Violeta beautifully to Matthew Polenzani's Alfredo.
